The Night You Can´t Remember Is The Night I Can´t Forget

Villa Schöningen will show more than 30 installations by Danish artist Tal R from July 2 to October 16, 2016. Most of the works will be presented to the public for the first time in a spectacular show “The night you can’t remember is the night I can’t forget”.

The artist Tal R is a master of mystification and elevation of the everyday. The media of his oeuvre are versatile: Tal R works with oil on canvas, he draws, works with collages, videos and creates sculptures and installations.

For the exhibition at Villa Schöningen, all halls on the second floor are darkened and form the presentation area for Tal R’s overall installation: a total of 39 moving sculptures, plays of light and shadow, and smaller sound spaces.

Tal R describes the exhibition as the culmination of a nine-year creative period in which he has been working with movable sculptures.
The historically significant location of the Villa Schöningen was meaningful for Tal R for this exhibition and its title “The night you can’t remember is the night I can’t forget”. The Glienicke Bridge and the Villa Schöningen are historical places of memory. Memory is linked to individual experience and is multi-layered. Likewise, the memory of a place varies through different perspectives. Art also poses the question of perspective and only acquires its meaning through individual contemplation.

Tal R was born Tal Rosenzweig in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1967. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Denmark. Tal R now lives and works in Copenhagen. He attended the Billedskolen there from 1986 to 1988 and then the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1994 to 2000. Since 2005 Tal R has held a professorship at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.

Fabric. Textile and the Female Nude

Current exhibition

The exhibition Fabric: Textile and the Female Nude explores how the tradition of depicting the female nude is connected to the portrayal of textiles. Whether historical paintings or contemporary photographs, the clothing, fabrics, and draperies in these works continue to influence the depiction of the female body today—and accentuate, veil, or even censor nudity. Featuring works by Lucas Cranach, Rembrandt, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Cindy Sherman.

In addition to works in the house, an installation by artist Sophie Utikal will also be shown in the historic park of Villa Schöningen.
